RIT sweeps AU softball team
RIT pitcher Carlissa Cole hit a solo homerun in the fourth inning to break a 2-2 tie and give the Tigers (16-9, 8-2 Empire 8) the win in the opener. Cole allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out one over seven innings.
AU (11-8, 2-6 Empire 8) led 1-0 after one inning after sophomore second baseman Maressa Mistretta’s (Shirley, NY/Longwood) RBI single drove in junior shortstop Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central). A two-run homerun by RIT’s Allee Emmi put the Tigers up 2-1 before a single by junior third baseman Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) plated Hedrick with the tying run in the bottom of the fourth.
Senior Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) took the pitching loss for AU. She allowed nine hits and three earned runs over seven innings, striking out four.
In the second game, RIT scored four runs in the third off Hedrick, with Emily Courtney hitting an RBI triple and Cole stroking a two-run triple in the frame. AU scored a pair in the fifth to cut its deficit in half, with Mistretta’s single driving in senior first baseman Ashley Passaro (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) and Hedrick. That’s as close as the Saxons would get, as Courtney’s second triple of the game drove in an insurance run in the top of the seventh.
RIT hurler Brittany Kemp earned the win, striking out 10 and allowing two unearned runs and four hits over seven innings. Hedrick allowed five runs (all earned) on seven hits while striking out five.
AU is in action next on Saturday, April 23, for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at St. John Fisher.
