Saxon softball team splits with Fisher

PITTSFORD, NY -- The Alfred University softball team split an Empire 8 doubleheader at St. John Fisher Saturday afternoon. The Saxons won the opener, 9-3, before dropping the second game, 7-6.

In the first game, AU (12-9, 3-7 Empire 8) got a complete-game win from senior pitcher Chelsey Cary (Corfu, HY/Pembroke), who allowed one earned run on six hits while striking out two. Junior shortstop Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) had three hits and scored three times; junior third baseman Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) had three hits, scored twice and drove in three runs; and freshman centerfielder Breeal Delgado (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos) had two hits and three RBIs for for the Saxons.

In the second game, Fisher scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh to erase a 6-3 deficit and win 7-6.

Hedrick took the pitching loss for Alfred, allowing five runs (one earned) over 5.1 innings on 10 hits. She went 2-for-3 with a run scored; Shepherd was 3-for-3 with na run scored and an RBI; sophomore catcher Hana Gross (Union, NJ/Union) had two RBIs; and sophomore second baseman Maressa Mistretta (Shirley, NY/Longwood) was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
