AU softball team sweeps Nazareth

PITTSFORD, NY -- The Alfred University softball team swept an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader at Nazareth Saturday afternoon. The Saxons took the opener, 2-0, before winning the second game, 8-3.

Senior Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) tossed a five-hit shutout, striking out three, in Alfred’s game one victory. AU plated its two runs in the top of the third. Senior rightfielder Brittany Loucks (Addison, NY/Addison) hit a one-out double and moved to third on a single by sophomore second baseman Maressa Mistretta (Shirley, NY/Longwood). Junior third baseman Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) drove Loucks in with a single and with two outs, Mistretta scored on an error.

Mistretta, Shepherd, Loucks and freshman centerfielder Breeal Delgado (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos) each had one hit for AU.

Junior leftfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NY/Mother Seton Regional) hit a solo homerun and a double and scored twice in the Saxons’ victory in the second game. Shepherd was 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and two RBIs and junior pitcher Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run.

AU (14-9, 5-7 Empire 8) scored twice in the top of the first, but Nazareth (5-26, 1-11 Empire 8) answered with three in the bottom of the frame. The Saxons responded with single runs in each of the next three innings before taking a commanding five-run lead with three runs in the sixth.

Hedrick earned the complete-game pitching win for Alfred, allowing two earned runs on six hits and striking out five.

AU is in action next on Sunday, May, 1, when the Saxons wrap up Empire 8 Conference play with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Elmira.
