TROY, NY — It was a record-setting weekend for the Alfred University men’s and women’s track and field teams, which turned in some big performances at the New York State outdoor championship meet at RPI on Friday and Saturday.

Freshman Rebecca Graudons (Mayfield, NY/Mayfield) led the women’s team to a sixth-place finish. She won the pole vault with a school and state championship meet record height of 3.55 meters and was named Rookie of the Meet. Senior Shawn Ross (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) won the men’s shot put, breaking his own school record with a toss of 15.65 meters, and leading the men’s team to a seventh-place finish.

Both Graudons and Ross qualified provisionally for the NCAA Division III championships May 26-28 in St. Delaware, OH. They had previously met ECAC qualifying marks in their respective events, but did so again at the state championships. Ross also placed third in the discus (42.76 meters) and Graudons placed sixth in the high jump (1.48 meters). Junior Elisabeth Phillips-Jones (Watertown, MA/Watertown) set a new AU women’s record with her fifth-place finish in the 10,000-meter run (40:15.78), which also qualified her for the ECACs. Junior Richard Scott (Eden, NY/Eden) was third in the 200-meter dash (ECAC-qualifying 22.27 seconds) and was sixth in the 400-meter dash (50.46 seconds).
