Saxons compete at ECAC outdoor championships; AU freshman Graudons moves on to NCAA championships

BETHLEHEM, PA— The Alfred University men’s and women’s track and field teams competed Thursday and Friday at the ECAC outdoor championship meet, hosted by Moravian College.

After the meet, AU freshman Rebecca Graudons (Mayfield, NY/Mayfield) learned she will compete at the NCAA Division III championships May 26-28 in St. Delaware, OH. She had provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet with her first place (school-record 3.55 meters) at the state championships two weeks ago. She will be seeded 20th of 25 athletes at the national championship meet.

AU senior Shawn Ross (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) also met provisional standards for the NCAAs with his performance in the shot put at states, but did not qualify for the championships.

The AU men finished in 19th place at the ECAC meet, while the Alfred women posted no team score. Three each from the AU men’s and women’s teams competed in individual events, while the men’s team ran in one relay.

Freshmen Craig Gaymon (White Plains, NY/White Plains) finished second in the high jump (1.96 meters) to pace the Saxon men. Senior Shawn Ross (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) was fourth in the shot put (15.27 meters) and junior Rich Scott (Eden, NY/Eden) was 12th in the 200-meter dash (22.44 seconds).

The AU men's team of junior Randy Brito (New York, NY/Cardinal Hayes), sophomore Jeremy Weaver (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster Catholic), Gaymon and sophomore Chris Lopez (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) took fifth in the 4X100-meter relay (43.10 seconds).

Graudons took ninth in the pole vault (3.41 meters) to lead the Alfred women. junior Elisabeth Phillips-Jones (Watertown, MA/Watertown) was 11th in the 10,000-meter run (38:57.04), and freshman Chelsea Hall (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) was 26th in the 100-meter hurdles (15.98 seconds).
