AU hosts a community 5K walk/run to benefit Allegany County residents with cancer
The Alfred University Office of Residence Life and Gary Horowitz Service Learning Programs are teaming up to host a 5K Community Walk/Run on Saturday, Sept. 3, in the Village of Alfred. There will be food, music and games at the Village Bandstand on South Main Street after the event for families to enjoy.
Proceeds will benefit Allegany County Cancer Services, Inc. (ACCS). This organization raises money to help Allegany County residents pay for their cancer treatment.
"We are so grateful to organizations and businesses like Alfred University for their generosity and support. We can’t do what we do without them," said Lori Ballengee, founder and board president for ACCS. To date, ACCS has assisted 177 county residents to meet more than $55,000 in expenses.
"We help with any aspect of cancer treatment. The majority of what we do is gas cards to help people get back and forth to hospitals, doctor’s appointments and treatment. But, we also help with co-pays, special food needs and medical equipment and supplies related to cancer treatment", Ballengee said.
Registration for the Walk/Run is $10 per person (infants and children under age 5 are free), and will begin at 9:30 am at the bandstand at the Alfred University entrance. The Walk/Run will begin promptly at 10 am. Alfred University students are volunteering their time to help with registration and running the event.
