The 2011-12 Marlin and Ginger Miller Dance Residency Program at Alfred University will open its season with a performance by the Kate Weare Company at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Miller Theater on the Alfred University campus.

Tickets are $5 for general admission; $1 for Alfred University students; and $3 for non-AU students and senior citizens. Tickets may be purchased by emailing the Alfred University box office at or by calling 607.871.2828.

Weare will also be teaching a master dance class at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, in Room 300 of the Miller Performing Arts Center. The class is open to the public.

The Kate Weare Company is a New York-based contemporary dance group characterized by "fierce physicality, thoughtfulness and authenticity," according to one reviewer, "Weare’s dances explore a contemporary view of intimacy ¬- both stark and tender - by drawing on our most basic urge to move and decode movement."

Weare, who is known for work that is "physically charged and emotionally unguarded," won first prize in New York’s The AWARD Show in 2007; received a Princess Grace Award for Choreography in 2009; and was awarded a 2010 Joyce Theater Foundation Fellowship.

The dance company just completed a successful season at the Joyce Theater in New York City, and has been invited back for another Joyce season in 2012.
