Alfred University faculty and staff formally welcomed the class of 2015 to campus and fall semester 2011 with a Convocation ceremony featuring welcomes by AU President Charles M. Edmondson and Student Senate President Ana Devlin-Gauthier.

The some 575 news students, representing the largest freshman class in the University’s history, also heard from Librarian and University Archivist Laurie McFadden, AU class of 1991, who presented an introduction to AU and the surrounding campus through a series of historical vignettes.

The new students arrived at the Convocation after taking the "Allen Walk." Allen Walk is both a tradition and a place at Alfred University. The place is the pedestrian part of campus, primarily between Powell Campus Center and Harder Hall. It is also the procession used to by new students as their symbolic entrance to the campus.

Both the street and the procession honor the memory of Jonathan and Abigail Allen. Jonathan was the second president of Alfred University. Abigail, his wife, was a teacher at AU and, with Jonathan, a strong guide in the development of the major principles of education and engagement at Alfred University. These include excellent education, good critical thinking, social responsibility, the embrace of diversity, and gender equity both inside and outside the classrooms.
