Lady Saxons fall in second day of AU soccer tournament

ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University women’s soccer was defeated by visiting Oswego State 4-0, in the second day of the Alfred University soccer tournament, played Saturday and Sunday on Merrill Field. In the first contest on Sunday, Potsdam tied Juniata 3-3 in double OT.

Oswego opened 36:15 into the game when Nikki Liadka found the net off a feed from teammate Alexa Krebs. The Lakers would head into intermission with a 1-0 lead, as they outshot the Saxons 13-1.

Liadka tallied her second goal increasing Oswego’s lead to 2-0 with 17 minutes remaining. The Lakers would tack on two goals in a 1:21 minute span to round out the scoring.

Alfred Goalkeeper, Ashley Frazell (Newton, NJ/Newton) played the full 110 minutes and had 10 saves. Emily Varonier earned the victory for the Lakers making one save. For the game, Oswego outshot Alfred 27-1, and had 14 shots on goal to AU’s one.

In the opening game of the day, Potsdam and Juniata played an even game trading goals throughout. Juniata struck first just five minutes into the contest when Casandra Torres found the back of the net off a feed from Aimee Radic. The teams traded goals, giving Juniata a 2-1 lead at the 39:31 minute mark. The Bears responded scoring two goals in a four-minute span to take a 3-2 lead. The game would remain tied until Junaiata’s Nikki Hankinson buried a pass from Taylor Whetsel with two seconds remaining to tie it up 3-3. Neither team was able to generate a scoring chance in the two overtime periods, resulting in double OT draw.

For the game, Juniata held a slight 11-9 shot advantage, while Potsdam had six shots on goal to the Eagles 5. Erika Hoad made two saves in goal for Potsdam (1-0-1). Juniata (0-1-1) got three saves from goalkeeper Gabriella Ricciardi.

All-tournament selections were: Sophomore defender Martha McGrath (Victor, NY/Victor) and Freshman Midfielder Rachael Williams (Penfield, NY/Penfield) from Alfred; Bri Dolan and Nikki Liadka from Oswego; Nikki Hankinson and Paula Pryor from Juniata; Maggie Malinowski and Heather Johnson from Potsdam.

Alfred (0-2-0) is in action next on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 4:30 p.m. at home against Pitt-Bradford.
