Saxons top Morrisville 4-2

MORRISVILLE, NY- The Alfred University men’s soccer evened their record with a 4-2, victory over host Morrisville, Tuesday evening.

Junior forward Rigel Johnson (Little Valley, NY/Cattaraugus-Little Valley) put the Saxons up early burying a shot off the left post, just 4:44 into the contest. The game remained 1-0, until AU scored two goals in just over a seven-minute span to build a commanding 3-0 lead. Junior forward Frankie Mannino (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) netted the first goal of the run, and sophomore forward Jeffery Thomas (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) tallied the second off a deflected corner from freshman midfielder Ian Healey (Orange Village, OH/Orange).

In the second half, Morrisville (0-3-1) closed the deficit to 3-2, off a pair of goals from Gilroy Alvarez. His first came at the 61:37 mark off a feed from Chernor Barrie and his second at the 60:29 mark from Joey Plummer.

AU tacked on an insurance goal with just over nine minutes left in regulation as Thomas notched his second goal of game from junior midfielder Tony Gai (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock). For the game, AU held a 21-19 advantage over the Mustangs in shots.

Alfred (2-2-1, 0-0-0 E8) used a pair of goalies in the contest. Sophomore Jacob Bird (Auburn, NY/Skaneateles) got the start for the Saxons and made nine saves. Sophomore Samuel Guy (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) played the second half for AU making one save. Shane Sullivan went the distance for the Mustangs and recorded eight saves.

AU returns to action Saturday, Sept. 17, at 12 p.m., when travel to take on Elmira to open E8 play.
