Saxons edge Wells 3-2

ALFRED, NY-The Alfred University men’s soccer team improved its 2011 record to (3-2-1), Tuesday evening with a 3-2 victory over visiting Wells College, in non-conference action.

The Express opened the scoring when Delroy Roberts tallied an unassisted goal 13:48 into the game. AU’s Jeffery Thomas (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) tied it less than ten minutes later, putting away a rebound from junior forward Frankie Mannino (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy). The Saxons took the lead with less than nine minutes to go in the first half of play when Mannino buried a header from junior forward Rigel Johnson (Little Valley, NY/Cattaraugus-Little Valley). The Express quickly responded 6:38 later with Luke Miller converting on a penalty kick. The game would head into intermission tied up a two apiece.

Despite opportunties for both the game remained tied until freshman midfielder Nicholas Milliman (Randolph, NY/Randolph) scored the eventual game-winner finishing a corner-kick from Thomas. For the game, AU held a commanding 15-8 advantage in shots.

Senior Elliot Thorpe (Highlands Ranch, CO/Thunder Ridge) made two games in goal to earn the victory and C.J. Bayly made three stops for the Express.

The Saxons return to action Saturday, Sep. 24, at 4:30 p.m., taking on Empire 8 foe Ithaca at Merrill Field.
