AU to send service group to aid flood cleanup at Beds 4 Kids, Owego

A group of students, faculty, and staff from Alfred University will travel to Owego, Saturday, Oct. 1 to aid in flood cleanup at Beds 4 Kids, a non-profit organization that donates furniture to those in need.

Beds 4 Kids collects overstocked and gently used beds and furniture from retailers and universities for distribution to families. The recent Central/Southern Tier New York flooding brought 4 feet of water into the facility, destroying thousands of tons of furniture and mattresses and damaging parts of the building.

The organization is currently trying to save the undamaged furniture that had been stored above the floodwaters in order to begin distributing to the thousands of displaced flood victims.

The group of volunteers from Alfred will be helping to clean the facility and rebuild damaged storage areas for future furniture donations.

"They have dedicated their time and energy to helping those in need, and now they are the ones in need," said Jessica Jennings, Service Learning Coordinator at Alfred University. "In taking this service trip, we are looking to assist them in getting back on their feet so they can return to helping others once again."

All students, faculty, staff, and community members are welcome to join the University’s effort to assist this organization. Transportation and lunch will be provided. For more information on the trip, contact Jennings at or call 607-871-2162.

Beds 4 Kids owner Leonard Hilldale purchased the former Owego Middle School building and launched the charity in 2010 with the goal of seeing to it that every child in Tioga County has something to rest on at night. In the past year, Beds 4 Kids has provided over 30,000 mattresses and box springs to people in need.
