AU volleyball team drops two at Empire 8 tournament

ELMIRA, NY - The Alfred University volleyball team dropped two matches during Saturday’s first round of action at the Empire 8 Conference round-robin championship tournament.

Alfred (3-5, 0-2 Empire 8) lost 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-9) to tournament host Elmira, then lost 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-12) to Ithaca. St. John Fisher will host the second round of the tournament Oct. 21 and 22. The top four teams in the round-robin tournament will advance to the conference championship tournament in November, the winner of which earns the Empire 8’s automatic bid to the NCAA championships.

Against Elmira, AU was led by sophomore Chelsea Hall (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) with six kills and eight digs; sophomore Paige Jensen (Weiser, ID/Weiser) with three kills and a block; sophomore Brittany Anselment (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) with 13 digs; and sophomore Janelle Gallipeau (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) with nine assists.

Hall had 10 kills and Gallipeau 18 assists in the Ithaca match. Sophomore Samantha Wood (Newfield, NY/Newfield) had six kills and a pair of blocks and Jensen had four kills and a block.

AU plays next on Sunday’s second day of action at the round robin tournament: at 11:30 a.m. against Nazareth and 4:30 p.m. against Hartwick. On Oct. 21 and 22 at Fisher, the Saxons will play Stevens, Fisher and Utica.
