AU volleyball team loses a pair at Empire 8 tournament
Alfred (3-7, 0-4 Empire 8) lost 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-15) to Nazareth Sunday morning, then lost 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-18) to Hartwick in the afternoon. Combined with losses Saturday to Elmira and Ithaca, AU finishes the first leg of the Empire 8 round-robin with an 0-4 conference mark.
Against Nazareth, AU was led by sophomore Chelsea Hall (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) with nine kills, three service aces, eight digs and three blocks; sophomore Paige Jensen (Weiser, ID/Weiser) with two kills, eight digs and a block; sophomore Brittany Anselment (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) with 12 digs; sophomore Samantha Wood (Newfield, NY/Newfield) with two kills and five blocks; and sophomore Janelle Gallipeau (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) with 12 assists.
In the Hartwick match, Hall led AU with five kills, nine digs and four blocks. Jensen had four kills and two blocks; Anselment had 17 digs; and Gallipeau 17 assists.
St. John Fisher will host the second round of the tournament Oct. 21 and 22, where AU will play Stevens, Fisher and Utica. The top four teams in the round-robin tournament will advance to the conference championship tournament in November, the winner of which earns the Empire 8’s automatic bid to the NCAA championships.
AU plays next on Thursday, Sept. 29, at Brockport.
