Alfred University’s Clark, Dwyer earn Empire 8 weekly football honors

ALFRED, NY - Alfred University’s Austin Dwyer (Hornell, NY/Hornell), a sophomore tailback, and Nick Clark (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood), a senior linebacker, have earned weekly football honors from the Empire 8 Conference.

Dwyer was named Offensive Player of the Week and Clark Defensive Player of the Week for their performances in Saturday’s 30-22 victory over visiting Springfield College in the Saxons’ Empire 8 opener.

Dwyer rushed for 137 yards and a touchdown, leading an AU offense that piled up 232 yards on the ground against a Springfield team that came into the game allowing less than 90 rushing yards per contest. Dwyer has now eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark in each of Alfred’s three games this year.

Clark earned Defensive Player of the Week honors for a second straight week, logging 19 tackles (11 solo, one for loss). He spearheaded a defensive effort that held Springfield - which came into the game averaging 491 yards rushing - to 227 yards on the ground, including a mere 27 yards rushing and 83 yards of total offense in the second half. The Saxons’ short-yardage back, Clark also ran eight times for 15 yards and two touchdowns.

Alfred, ranked 14th in this week’s national poll, is in action next on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 4 p.m. at Empire 8 rival St. John Fisher.
