AU women’s tennis downs Wells

AURORA, NY - The Alfred University women’s tennis team earned a 7-2 non-conference win over host Wells College Monday afternoon.

The Saxons (4-7, 0-5 Empire 8 Conference) swept three doubles matches and took four of six in singles play. Senior Griffin Currie (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) claimed first singles, 6-2, 6-3, and freshman Brennan Ferguson (Destrechan, LA/Ursuline Academy) took second singles, 60-3, 6-3. The pair teamed to win first doubles, 8-2.

Other singles winners for Alfred were senior Shannon Tovey (Chester, CT/Valley Regional), 6-1, 6-1 in fifth singles, and junior Catherine Spencer (Homer, NY/Homer), 6-2, 6-1 in sixth singles.

Tovey and freshman Jennifer Smith (Cutchogue, NY/Mattituck) won first doubles, 8-6, and junior Devyn Devantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) and junior Rebecca Switzer (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse) claimed third doubles, 8-4.

Alfred is in action next on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 4 p.m. at home against Pitt-Bradford.
