Bergren Forum speaker to give visual tour of glass design/sculpture
9/28/11

Angus Powers, an alumnus of the Alfred University School of Art & Design and currently associate professor in glass, will present "Work Play: A visual tour of my glass design, sculpture, and the Alfred University Glass Program" on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 12:10 p.m. in AU’s Powell Campus Center’s Nevins Theater. The program is open to the public free of charge.

Powers, in his sixth year at Alfred University, says he has gained an understanding of both the magnitude and subtleties of the glass program. During his presentation, he will be a guide through the facility, curriculum, and the actual glass designs and sculptures that he and the students create. In turn, this will demonstrate how they "play for a living."

"I have found that ambiguity and humor are the most valuable tools in creating artwork that is accessible to all types of people," said Powers.

He is a contemporary sculptor working with blown glass installations and functional wares. Powers earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from AU. He then earned a master of fine arts degree in glass at the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Elkins Park, PA.

The Bergren Forum, sponsored by the Alfred University Division of Human Studies, meets Thursdays during each academic semester at the University. Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch; coffee and tea will be available.
