Saxon men’s soccer team dumps Hilbert

ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University men’s soccer team shut out visiting Hilbert College, 3-0, Wednesday evening on Merrill Field.

AU (4-4-1, 0-2-0 Empire 8) opened the scoring 9:01 into the game when sophomore Jeffery Thomas (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) scored off an assist from freshman Eric Deemer (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta). Just over 15 minutes later, Deemer made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal and AU held a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Junior Tony Gai (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) closed out the scoring 5:47 into the second half, assisted by Thomas.

Alfred outshot Hilbert 17-3. The Saxons used a trio of goalie to shut out the visiting Hawks. Senior Elliot Thorpe (Highlands Ranch, CO/Thunder Ridge) started and played 59:41, and wasn’t called on to make a save. Sophomore Sam Guy (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) played 12:10 and didn’t make a save; and sophomore Jacob Bird (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) played the final 18:09 and stopped one shot.

The Saxons are in action next on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. at home against Ithaca.
