ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University women’s tennis team thumped visiting Medaille College, 8-1, Wednesday afternoon.

The Saxons (5-8, 0-5 Empire 8) got singles wins from senior Griffin Currie (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep), 6-0, 6-0 in first singles; freshman Brennan Ferguson (Destrechan, LA/Ursuline), 6-1, 6-1 in second singles; freshman Jennifer Smith (Cutchogue, NY/Mattituck), 6-1, 6-1 in third singles; senior Shannon Tovey (Chester, CT/Valley Regional), 6-2, 6-0 in fourth singles; and freshman Emily Eisenberg (Oyster Bay, NY/Oyster Bay), 6-0, 6-1 in sixth singles.

AU swept doubles play, with Currie and Smith taking first doubles, 8-2; Ferguson and Tovey winning second doubles, 8-12; and junior Catherine Spencer (Homer, NY/Homer) and sophomore Renee Duquette (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) claiming third doubles, 8-3.

Alfred is in action next for a pair of weekend Empire 8 matchups: Saturday, Oct. 8, at 1 p.m. at Utica and Sunday, Oct. 9, at 1 p.m. at home against Hartwick.
