Saxon women’s tennis team splits final two Empire 8 matches

ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University women’s tennis team split a pair of Empire 8 Conference matches over the weekend to wrap up its regular season. The Saxons (6-9, 1-6 Empire 8) earned a 9-0 win at Utica Saturday before dropping a 60-3 decision to visiting Hartwick on Sunday.

Against Utica, AU got singles wins from senior Griffin Currie (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep), 6-0, 6-0 in first singles; freshman Brennan Ferguson (Destrechan, LA/Ursuline), 6-1, 6-1 in second singles; junior Melissa Boyer (Bloomfield, MI/Lahser), 6-2, 6-1 in third singles; freshman Jennifer Smith (Cutchogue, NY/Mattituck), 6-0, 6-0 in fourth singles; senior Shannon Tovey (Chester, CT/Valley Regional), 6-0, 6-0 in fifth singles; and freshman Emily Eisenberg (Oyster Bay, NY/Oyster Bay), 6-2, 6-1 in sixth singles.

Currie and Smith won first doubles, 8-6; Ferguson and Tovey took second doubles, 8-0; and juniors Catherine Spencer (Homer, NY/Homer) and Devyn DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) won third doubles, 8-0.

Currie and Tovey earned Alfred’s only singles in against Hartwick. Currie took first singles, 6-3, 6-1 and Tovey won fifth singles, 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-2). Currie teamed with Ferguson to win first doubles, 8-2.

Alfred is in action next Oct. 14-16 at the New York State championship tournament in Ithaca.
