Penn College clip Saxons 5-4, in OT
Junior forward Frankie Mannino (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) scored the first goal of the game off an assist from junior midfielder Sam Miller (Kinsman, OH/Badger). Penn College answered the Saxons’ early strike with two of their own to claim a 2-1 lead with about 20 minutes left in the first half. Mannino netted his second goal of the contest to even it up ten minutes later. Penn College found the net for third time to give them a 3-2 lead at halftime. The Wildcats held a 9-7 shot advantage for the first half.
The Saxons (5-6-2, 0-3-0 Empire 8) came out strong in the second half scoring two goals to build a 4-3 lead. The first goal came from junior midfielder Tony Gai (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) off an assist from sophomore midfielder Jeffrey Thomas (Canandaigua, NY/ Canandaigua). Mannino notched his third goal to regain the lead for AU at 70th minute mark. William DeAngelo evened the game up (4-4) for the Wildcats with less than two minutes left in regulation.
In overtime Brennan tallied the game-winner off a set piece deflection less than two minutes in the extra frame.
For the game, the Wildcats (7-4-2) outshot the Saxons 18-16, and AU held a corner kick advantage of 7-4. Senior Elliott Thorpe (Highlands Ranch, CO/Thunder Ridge) made six saves in net for the Saxons, while Aaron Vole made six saves of his own for the Wildcats. Brennan led the attack for Penn College recording a hat trick.
Alfred returns to action Saturday, Oct. 15th, at 3 p.m., when they take on host Nazareth College.
