AU’s ‘STUDIO Visits’ series continues with program by collage artist
10/14/11

"STUDIO Visits," a series of lectures with a talk-show format hosted by M. Michelle Illuminato, assistant professor in the Alfred University School of Art & Design’s Freshman Foundation program, continues at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, in Nevins Theater at Powell Campus Center. The series is held weekly on from 9-11:15 a.m. Wednesdays, and is open to the campus community and the public, free of charge.

This week’s guest will be Todd Bartel of Boston, Mass., whose topic will be "Assemblage, Painting, Collage."

Bartel is a collage artist teaching drawing, painting, sculpture, installation art, and conceptual art at the Cambridge School of Weston. He is also the founder and director of the school’s Thompson Gallery, a teaching gallery dedicated to thematic inquiry, and "IS" (Installation Space), a proposal-based installation gallery.

Bartel has curated and exhibited collages and landscape paintings across the nation. His art is dedicated to advocating for environmental concerns, often depicting marginalized or appropriated landscapes and natural resources. He is currently curating the exhibition series "Strange Glue-Collage At 100," which is set to open next year.

He has previously taught at Harvard University, Brown University, Carnegie Mellon University, Manhattanville College and Bridgeport University and has been a visiting critic at the Rhode Island School of Design and Vermont College.

Bartel has received a number of fellowships and awards for his paintings and collages, including the 1990 Jacob K. Javits Fellowship from the U.S. Department of Education and a Connecticut Council on the Arts Fellowship Grant in support of the continuation of his drawing series, "Garden Studies," and his assemblage series, "Terra Reverentia."

Bartel received a bachelor of fine arts degree in painting from The Rhode Island School of Design and a master of fine arts degree in painting from Carnegie Mellon University.
