AU volleyball team edges Canton

ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University volleyball team claimed a five-game victory over visiting SUNY Canton Friday evening at the McLane Center.

The teams traded wins in the first four games, with AU winning the opener, 25-19, and the third game, 25-21. Canton took the second game, 26-24, and the fourth game, 25-21, before Alfred won the decisive fifth game, 15-11.

The Saxons (7-14, 0-4 Empire 8) had three players with double-digits in kills and digs. Sophomore Samantha Wood (Newfield, NY/Newfield) had 10 kills, 11 digs and nine blocks; sophomore Paige Jensen (Weiser, ID/Weiser) had 10 kills, 11 digs and two blocks; and sophomore Chelsea Hall (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) had 14 kills, 14 digs and four blocks.

Sophomore Brittany Anselment (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) had 30 digs and three service aces; sophomore Tara Barone (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) had 39 assists and 16 digs; and junior Jennifer Miranda (Bronx, NY/Academy of Letters) had 13 digs.

Alfred is in action next at next weekend’s Empire 8 Conference round-robin tournament hosted by St. John Fisher. The Saxons play Stevens at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, then take on Fisher (12:30 p.m.) and Utica (5:30 p.m.) on Saturday, Oct. 22. AU finished 0-4 in the first round of play in the conference round-robin, Sept. 24 and 25 in Elmira. The top four teams in the round-robin advance to the Empire 8 championship tournament, the winner of which earns an automatic bid to the NCAA championships.
