Frostburg State tops Saxons in double-overtime shootout

FROSTBURG, MD - Host Frostburg State clipped visiting Alfred University, 54-53, in double-overtime Saturday afternoon. Bobcat kicker Jonathan Adams tied the game in regulation at 40-40 with a 42-yard field goal as time expired, then won it with a successful extra point try in the second extra session, after Alfred had failed on its own PAT.

With the loss, Alfred drops to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in Empire 8 Conference play. The Bobcats improve to 3-4 (2-2 Empire 8). The loss spoiled a fourth-quarter comeback by Alfred, which knotted the game at 37-37 when senior quarterback T.J. Kilcarr (Nanuet, NY/Clarkstown South) found junior tight end Adam Schutz (Geneva, NY/Geneva) for a 20-yard TD pass with 4:35 left in regulation.

The AU defense held firm on Frostburg’s ensuing possession, with senior cornerback Roland O’Brien (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls) intercepting Frostburg’s Josh Volpe at the AU 33-yard line with 2:42 left. AU drove to the Frostburg 25-yard line and appeared to have the game in hand when senior placekicker Eric Rockwood booted a 42-yard field goal with 30 seconds left in the game. The Bobcats started their drive at their own 30-yard line with 24 seconds to go and went 45 yards in three plays, with Volpe connecting with wideout Anthony Young to set up Adams’ game-tying kick with no time left.

Each team traded touchdowns in the first extra session. Volpe tossed a 35-yard TD pass to Young and AU answered when Kilcarr threw a 25-yard scoring pass to sophomore wide receiver Justin Oliver (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point). On Alfred’s opening possession of the second overtime, sophomore tailback Austin Dwyer (Hornell, NY/Hornell) scored on a 15-yard run, but the extra point failed. On third down, Volpe connected with Adam Tuzikow from four yards and Adams made the game winning extra point.

The teams combined to produce more than 1,000 yards of offense (556 for Frostburg, 446 for AU) and 58 first downs. Kilcarr completed 19 of 38 passes for 243 yards, four touchdowns and an interception and Dwyer ran for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Schutz had five catches for 66 yards and a pair of scores and sophomore wideout Josh Phillips (Camillus, NY/West Genesse) had four catches for 41 yards and a score.

Volpe was 33-for-59 for 441 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. Three times (twice on successive possessions at the end of the first half) he led the Bobcats to scoring drives in the closing seconds of a half. In addition to his late heroics that tied the game at the end of regulation, Volpe connected with Lucas Adolph on a three-yard scoring pass with 11 seconds left in the first half. The score came after AU senior linebacker Nick Clark (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood) returned an interception 57 yards for a score, giving Alfred a 20-7 lead with under a minute left in the second quarter. The Bobcats executed a successful on-side kick after the Volpe-to-Adolph TD, recovering at the AU 35-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Volpe connected with Cory Shank for a touchdown that knotted the score at 20-20 at the half.

Young caught 16 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns and Shank had six catches for 102 yards and a score. JD Hook ran for 83 yards and caught two passes for 39 yards.

Clark had 15 tackles and a forced fumble to lead the AU defense. Junior free safety Jon Jackson (Amherst, NY/Bishop Timon) had an interception and junior strong safety Reggie Pressley (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) and tackle Mike Raplee (Dundee, NY/Dundee) had nine and eight tackles, respectively.

Brendan Blanchette had nine tackles and a forced fumble and Joseph Ross had eight tackles and a forced fumble for Frostburg. Keith Smith had nine tackles and a sack and Aaron Gruber had eight tackles and a sack.
