AU volleyball team takes one of three at Empire 8 tournament
Alfred (8-16, 1-6 Empire 8) lost 3-1 (25-12, 25-12, 23-25, 25-18) to Stevens on Friday, then lost 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-22) to tournament host St. John Fisher on Saturday before beating Utica, 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-22) on Saturday evening.
Sophomore Chelsea Hall (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) led AU against Stevens with seven kills, two service aces, 14 digs and two blocks. Sophomore Kelsey Brand (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) had four kills, eight digs and four blocks and sophomore Janelle Gallipeau (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) had 13 assists.
Against Fisher, Hall had eight kills, three service aces, eight digs and four blocks; sophomore Paige Jensen (Weiser, ID/Weiser) had five kills and five blocks; and Gallipeau had 13 assists and seven digs.
In the win over Utica, Jensen had nine kills, five digs and two blocks and Hall had six kills, a service ace, 12 digs and three blocks. Sophomore Samantha Wood (Newfield, NY/Newfield) had seven kills, 10 digs and six blocks; sophomore Brittany Anselment (Baldwinsville, NH/C.W. Baker) had 16 digs and a service ace; and Gallipeau had 23 assists, two aces, nine digs and a block.
The top four teams in the conference round-robin tournament advance to the Empire 8 championship tournament, the winner of which earns the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA championships.
Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. at Houghton.
