AU men’s soccer team blanks SUNY Cobleskill in home finale

ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University men’s soccer team shut out visiting SUNY Cobleskill, 4-0, Tuesday afternoon on Merrill Field in the Saxons 2011 home finale.

The teams played to a scoreless first half, with Alfred holding a commanding 11-2 advantage in shots (5-1 in shots on goal) and a 7-0 edge in corner kicks. Despite several solid scoring opportunities, the game remained tied until 8:21 into the second half, when junior midfielder Tony Gai (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) broke through the Cobleskill defense and chipped a shot past Tiger goalkeeper Brian Faulkner.

Gai’s goal opened the floodgates for AU (6-8-2), as the Saxons tallied three goals over the next 17 minutes to put the game out of reach. Junior forward Frankie Mannino (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) scored at he 67:12 mark off an assist from freshman midfielder Nicholas Milliman (Randolph, NY/Randolph), and 29 seconds later, Mannino assisted on a goal by junior forward Rigel Johnson (Little Valley, NY/Cattaraugus-Little Valley), giving the Saxons a 3-0 advantage. Mannino hit a low cross from the left side through the goal box that Johnson one-timed passed a lunging Faulkner. Junior midfielder Sam Miller (Kinsman, OH/Badger) closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal with 19:30 left in the contest.

For the game, AU held a 23-4 advantage in shots (14-2 in shots on goal) and had 12 corner kicks to one for Cobleskill.

Senior Elliott Thorpe (Highlands Ranch, CO/Thunder Ridge) started in goal for AU and made one save in 70:30 of action. Sophomores Samuel Guy Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) and Jacob Bird (Auburn, NY/Skaneateles) split the remaining time in net, with Bird making one save. Faulkner finished with 10 saves for Cobleskill (5-12-0).

AU wraps up its season Saturday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. at Empire 8 Conference foe St. John Fisher.
