Houghton nips AU volleyball team

HOUGHTON, NY - Host Houghton College edged the Alfred University volleyball team in five games Thursday evening.

After dropping the first two games by identical 25-15 scores, the Saxons took the next two, both by 25-22 scores, before Houghton claimed the decisive fifth game, 16-14. With the loss, Alfred falls to 8-17 on the season.

Sophomore Chelsea Hall (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) had15 kills, 15 digs, three service aces and five blocks and senior Emily Crosby (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had nine kills, digs and a pair of blocks to pace AU.

Sophomore Kelsey Brand (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) had four kills, 13 digs and 11 blocks; sophomore Jackie Tomisman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) had nine blocks; sophomore Brittany Anselment (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) had two service aces and 17 digs; and sophomore Janelle Gallipeau (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) had 27 assists and 12 digs.

AU wraps up its 2011 season on Saturday with a home tri-match with Cazenovia and Penn State-Abington. The Saxons play Cazenovia at noon and Penn State Abington at 4 p.m.
