Saxons top St. John Fisher 3-2, in Empire 8 action

PITTSFORD, NY-The Alfred University men’s soccer team concluded their 2011 season knocking off host St. John Fisher 3-2, Saturday afternoon in an Empire 8 Conference matchup.

The Cardinals struck quickly when Chris Maxwell buried a cross from Austin Buckley just 33 seconds into the contest. Junior forward Frankie Mannino (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) responded for the Saxons netting a pair of goals in a 75 second span, to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore forward Jeffery Thomas (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) (one assist) increased AU’s lead to 3-1, at the 35-minute mark as he slid one past the keeper. The Saxons would head into intermission with 3-1 lead.

AU (7-8-2, 1-5-0 Empire 8) maintained their two-goal advantage, until Garhett Varin notched the Cardinals second goal to make it a 3-2, game with just over 18 minutes remaining. St. John fisher’s Sean Fishel had chance to tie it up as he was awarded a penalty kick at the 82 minute mark, but senior Elliot Thorpe (Highlands Ranch, CO/Thunder Ridge) came up big for the Saxons in goal as he denied Fishel’s shot. Thorpe made two more key saves as the Saxons ground out the remaining eight minutes to earn their first Empire 8 victory of the season.

Thorpe finished with his AU career making a game-high six saves in goal for the Saxons. Kyle Metcalfe stopped a pair of shots for the Cardinals (3-10-3, 1-4-1 Empire 8).
