AU men’s and women swimming and diving teams compete at Geneseo 10/31/11
In addition to Geneseo and Alfred, SUNY Brockport and Buffalo State also competed. Geneseo won the men’s and women’s meets; Alfred’s men finished ahead of third-place Brockport and fourth-place Buffalo State, while the AU women’s finished ahead of Buff State. Alfred’s men won five individual events and both relays. Sophomore Peter Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron) paced the AU men with wins in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.82) and 100-yard free (48.96). Other individual winners for the Saxons were juniors Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell) and Brett Irwin (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) in the 1,000-yard free (10:17.69) and 100-yard butterfly (54,25), respectively; and senior Warren Dolben (Rye, NH/Berwick Academy) in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.15). Chapman also took second in the 500-yard free (4:59.34) and Dolben was runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.41). Other top performers for the AU men were: freshman Jeffrey Rowland (Rochester, NY/Hilton), second in the 1,000-yard free (10:31.54) and third in the 200 free (1:51.40); senior Rich Guarniero (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor), second in the 100 backstroke (57.76); freshman Zachary Toth (Lockport, NY/Lockport), second in the 100 butterfly (55.04) and fourth in the 200 IM (2:05.45); and freshman Jeffrey Castellano (Fairport, NY/Fairport), third and fourth, respectively, in 3-meter diving (190.15 points) and 1-meter diving (173.55). The team of Guarniero, Dolben, Irwin and freshman Dave Coombs (Dansville, NY/Dansville) won the 200-yard medley relay (1:37.97) and the team of Chapman, Toth, Coombs and Sowinski took the 400 free relay (3:15.41). Freshman Christina Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) led the Alfred women, taking second in the 50 free (25.57) and 100 free (56.63). Other to swimmers for the AU women were: junior Shelby Remington (Pike, NY/Letchworth), third in the 1,000 free (11:57.87) and fifth in the 500 free (5:51.85); senior Donna Hoops (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo) and freshmen Allison Derwallis (Fairfield, CT/Fairfild-Ludlowe) and Sarah Dykstra, third (1:06.97), fifth (1:08.28) and sixth (1:09.22), respectively, in the 100 back; juniors Katie Ganley (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) and Eryn Martich (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) eighth (1:08.49) and 10th (1:09.67), respectively, in the 100 fly; junior Eda Pellumbi (Windham, ME/Cheverus), sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 1,000 free (12:17.17) and 500 free (5:57.68); and freshmen Tess Hannafin (Storrs, CT/E.O. Smith) and Alyssa Fuller (Alfred Station, NY/Alfred-Almond), seventh (1:24.00) and ninth (1:26.28), respectively, in the 100-yard breaststroke. AU is in action next on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 1 p.m. at home against RIT. |
