Lady Saxons thump Penn College in season finale

ALFRED, NY-- The Alfred University women’s soccer team wrapped up the 2011 season defeating visiting Penn College 4-0, Monday evening at Merrill Field.

AU scored an early goal when junior midfielder Devin Fitzgerald (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) assisted senior midfielder Molly Finnerty (Watertown, NY/ Watertown) off a corner kick. Alfred would score two more goals in the first half coming from senior midfielder AnnMarie Ventura (Olean, NY/ Olean) and freshman Rachael Williams (Penfield, NY/Penfield) (one assist). Alfred would close the half with a 3-0 lead, and a shot advantage of 17-0.

Senior midfielder Alicia Schuler (Elba, NY/Elba) netted the lone goal in the second half for the Saxons, which increased the lead to 4-0 at the 63-minute mark. For the game, AU (4-11-0, 0-7-0 Empire 8) held a commanding 33-0 shot advantage (19 shots on goal), and a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Junior goalie Ashley Frazell (Newton, NY/Newton) played the first half in goal for AU and was not called upon to make a save. Freshman Alicia Hanes (Vestal, NY/Vestal) split the second half with Brianna Opperman (Erie, PA/ NW Pennsylvania Collegiate), and were not challenged to make a save. Stephanie Koleno had a game-high 15 saves for the Wildcats (3-7-2).
