AU Western equestrian team competes in weekend shows in Alfred
ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University Western equestrian team hosted a pair of shows Sunday, Nov. 6, at the AU Equestrian Center.
Five teams competed in the shows, with Alfred placing third in the morning and first in the afternoon. By day’s end, five Saxon riders had qualified for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) regional championships, to be held March 10 at Alfred University.
Junior Kristen Eklin (Bovey, MN) won open horsemanship and placed second in open reining en route to earning High Point Rider honors in the Sunday morning show.
Other event winners in the morning show were: freshman Audrie Kelley (Friendship, NY/Cuba-Rushford) in advanced horsemanship; junior Brianna Cappiello (Webster, NY/East Rochester) in novice horsemanship; senior Brittany Wheeler (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh) and sophomore Kaylyn Slater (Phelps, NY/Midlakes), both in intermediate horsemanship; and sophomore Erin Paterson (Hancock, NY/Oakwood Friends) and senior Christina Nelson (West Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta), both in beginner horsemanship.
Earning runner-up finishes for the Saxons Sunday morning were: freshman Alexandria Buckheit (Mansfield, PA/Mansfield) in advanced horsemanship; senior Kaitlyn Bentley (Jamestown, NY) in novice horsemanship; and freshman Dijon Brooks (Hartford, CT/Metropolitan Learning Center Magnet School), sophomore Rachelle Hija (Campbell, NY/Campbell-Savona) and junior Camrie Costello (Shinglehouse, PA), all in intermediate horsemanship.
Eklin won open horsemanship and open reining Sunday afternoon and was again awarded High Point Rider honors. AU senior Kalcy O’Keefe (Rochester, NY/Penfield) earned Reserve High Point Rider honors.
Other winners in Sunday’s second show were: Buckheit in advanced horsemanship; and junior Tesla Parker (Westfield, VT/Harwood Union) and freshman Erika Miller (Wyoming, NY/Perry) in intermediate horsemanship.
AU riders earning second-place honors Sunday afternoon were sophomore Ashley Sinclair (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) in open reining; Kelley in advanced horsemanship; and Wheeler, sophomore Kaitlin Maciejewski (Portlandville, NY/Laurens) and freshman Alecia Orcutt (Elmira Heights, NY/Thomas A. Edison), all in intermediate horsemanship.
The following AU riders qualified for IHSA regionals: Capiello, Costello, Nelson, sophomore Derek Partridge (Groveland, NY/Geneseo), and junior Antonio Robles (Rexville, NY/Port Jervis).
The AU Western team is in action next on Saturday, Dec. 3, for a pair of Alfred University-hosted shows.
