AU men’s swimming and diving team beats Fredonia; Saxon women’s team drops dual-meet decision

FREDONIA, NY - The Alfred University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed Friday evening at Fredonia. The AU men’s team defeated the Blue Devils, 147-89, while the Saxon women’s team fell, 160-68.

Junior Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell), senior Warren Dolben (Rye, NH/Berwick Academy) and sophomore Pete Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron) each won two individual events to pace the Alfred men. Chapman won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:13.34) and 500-yard free (4:54.58); Dolben won the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.19) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.02); and Sowinski won the 100-yard free (49.08) and 50-yard free (22.26).

Also winning races for the Saxons were senior Rich Guarniero (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor), in the 200-yard free (1:51.48); and sophomore Kyle Kraeger (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta), in the 200-yard backstroke (2:08.57).

Other top performers for the men’s team were: freshman Jeff Rowland (Rochester, NY/Hilton), second in the 200-yard free (1:51.60) and 200-yard breast (2:28.38); freshman Zac Toth (Lockport, NY/Lockport), second in the 200 IM (2:03.29) and third in the 200 butterfly (2:07.49); freshman David Luke (Ocala, FL/West Port) second in the 50 free (22.53) and third in the 100 free (51.00); junior Brett Irwin (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton), second in the 200 fly (2:06.53); senior Rich Lenihan (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley), second in the 100-yard free (50.80); and sophomore Zach Kranefeld (Millville, NJ/Millville), third in three-meter diving (172.50) and 1-meter diving (157.65). Guarniero was second in the 200 back (2:11.27).

Guarniero, Dolben, Irwin and Sowinski won the 400-yard medley relay (3:38.73) and freshman Dave Coombs (Dansville, NY/Dansville), Chapman, Luke and Toth won the 200 free relay (1:30.14).

Freshman Christina Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) and junior Katie Ganley (Syracusze, NY/Westhill) each took second in two events to pace the AU women. Behr was second in the 200 free (2:06.27) and the 100 free (56.43); Ganley was second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:25.93) and 200-yard butterfly (2:25.64).

Other top performers for the Alfred women were: junior Shelby Remington (Gainesville, NY/Letchworth), third in the 1,000-yard free (11:51.09); senior Donna Hoops (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo), third in the 200 backstroke (2:24.12); and sophomore Eda Pellumbi (Windham, ME/Cheverus), third in the 500 free (5:45.82).

The team of Hoops, sophomore Heather Remchuk (Hornell, NY/Hornell), Ganley and Behr took second in the 400 medley relay (4:21.90), while freshman Molly Blair (Auburn, NY/Auburn), sophomore Paige Citarella (West Islip, NY/West Islip), Remington and junior Tracy Miller (Auburn, NY/Auburn) were third in the 200 free relay (1:52.81).

The AU women are in action next on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 1 p.m. at William Smith. The Saxon men’s and women’s teams compete next together at the Ithaca College Invitational Dec. 2-4.
