AU English equestrian team ties for fifth at Cornell show

ITHACA, NY - The Alfred University English equestrian team tied for fifth place in a show Sunday, Nov. 13, hosted by Cornell University.

Thirteen teams competed in the show, with AU sharing fifth place with Binghamton. Cornell won the show, with Nazareth placing second; Ithaca third; and Rochester fourth. Two AU riders qualified for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 2, Region 1 championships March 17 in Ithaca.

Junior Amelia Keyes (Webster, NY) won novice equitation on the flat and earned a trip to the regional show. Sophomore Megan Burke (Montrose, NY/Hendrick Hudson) placed sixth in novice equitation over fences and also qualified for regionals.

Sophomore Amelia Maslen (Chardon, OH/Andrews Osborne), in novice equitation over fences, and junior Tesla Parker (Waitsfield, VT/Harwood Union), in novice equitation on the flat, also won events for the Saxons. Maslen also took second in novice equitation on the flat.

Other top riders for AU were: freshman Suzette Santiago (Garrison, NY/Walter Panas), second in novice equitation over fences; senior Ronja Ogrodnik (Spencer, NY/Spencer-Van Etten), second in novice equitation on the flat; and sophomore Kaylyn Slater (Phelps, NY/Midlakes), third in advanced walk-trot-canter.

The AU English team is in action next on Nov. 19 and 20 at Lehman Farms in Pittsford, NY.
