Old Westbury defeats AU men's hoop team, 86-60

LONG ISLAND, NY - The Alfred University men’s basketball team was beaten by host Old Westbury Saturday afternoon, 86-60.

The Saxons (1-1, 0-0 Empire 8) fell to Old Westbury (1-0) were hit by turnovers, as they committed 30 miscues in the contest and trailed, 41-28, at the half. For the game, AU shot 27 percent from the floor, including 16 percent from the three-point line, and 75 percent from the free throw line.

Despite the defensive effort by the Panthers, the Saxons were still able to have solid performances by multiple players. Sophomore forward Mike Branche (Schenectady, NY/Colonie) led the Saxons in scoring with 13 points, and pulled down seven boards. Junior guard Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) contributed 10 points and three rebounds, and senior forward Derek Lewis (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads (Corning CC)) chipped in with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Old Westbury was led by Jamal Little in scoring by netting a game-high 25 points, on nine-of-14 shooting. Four other Panthers scored in double digits as well.

The Saxons look to bounce back when they return to action Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m. when they take on Penn College at McLane Center.
