Defense fuels Saxons to victory

ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University men’s basketball team handled visiting Penn College, 86-40 Tuesday evening, at the McLane Center.

Defense was key for the Saxons as they forced 12 turnovers in the first half, and 33 for the contest. AU finished with a season-high 21steals as they held the Wildcats to a mere 20 points in the second half, en route to an impressive 86-40, non-conference victory.

Freshman guard Tim Pacheco (Mt. Pocono, PA/Pocono Mt. East) netted a clutch three pointer to spark a 12-5 Saxon run with just over five minutes left in the first half to give them a 16 point advantage at intermission.

AU’s defense proved to be stout as it forced 13 steals in the second half and held the Wildcats to 20 percent shooting from the floor. For the game, AU shot an impressive 49 percent from the floor, while holding Penn College to 32 percent.

Sophomore guard Mike Branche (Schenectady, NY/ Colonie) scored a team-high 12 points and senior forward Derek Lewis (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads (Corning CC)) netted 10 points, and grabbed six bounds to pace the Saxons (2-1, 0-0 Empire 8). Senior forward Pat Hollenbeck (Ontario, NY/Wayne) chipped in with 10 points, and Pacheco, senior guard Josh Parker (Buffalo, NY/Sweet Home), freshman guard Justin Escobar (Henryville, PA/ Pocono Mt. East), and freshman forward Dan Totten (Red Hook, NY/ Red Hook) (team-high seven rebounds) each finished with eight points.

Jason Greenfield scored 12 points and Scott Fenton finished with eight points to lead to lead the Wildcats (0-6). Nicholas Deleon added four points and a team-high six rebounds.

The Saxons look to follow up their strong performance on Saturday, Nov. 26th at 2p.m. when they visit Hilbert College.
