AU women’s basketball team whips Wells to improve to 5-1
Four Saxon players scored in double figures and Alfred outrebounded Wells, 45-32, to improve to 5-1 on the season. Sophomore forward Grace Williamson (Olean, NY/Olean), who tallied four double-doubles in the team’s first five games, narrowly missed a fifth, with 12 points and eight boards to go with a pair of blocks and three steals.
The Saxons outshot Wells, 38 percent to 28 percent in the game’s first 20 minutes and led 31-17 at the half. Alfred shot 43 percent from the field and 92 percent from the foul line as the Saxons overcame 19 turnovers. Wells shot 38 percent but committed 22 miscues of its own while shooting only 65 percent from the line.
Senior guard Christina Jordan (Cornwall-on-the-Hudson, NY/Cornwall) netted 12 points, four assists and three steals for AU, while sophomore guard Cate Mensler (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Catholic) added a career-high 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Freshman guard Harley Cleary (Rochester, NY/Mercy) chipped in with 10 points and three assists and freshman forward Lindsay Drummind (Ogdensburg, NY/Ogdensburg) scored nine points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.
Jessilyn Aki-Artaho scored a game-high 19 points to lead Wells. Kristen Ryan added 10 points, two steals and a pair of blocks and Allison Pine contributed 11 points and five rebounds. Brittany White added a team-leading eight rebounds for the Express, who fall to 1-4 on the season.
Alfred is in action next on Friday, Dec. 2, at 4 p.m. at SUNY Canton.
