AU swimming and diving teams compete at Ithaca Invitational

ITHACA, NY - The Alfred University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed Friday evening in the first day’s action of the three-day Ithaca College Invitational meet.

AU is among nine teams competing in the meet, which is scored to 24 places and runs from Friday, Dec. 2, through Sunday, Dec. 4. After five events Friday, the AU men stood in seventh place while the Saxon women were in ninth. Cornell is leading both the men’s and women’s standings.

Senior Richard Guarniero (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor), senior Warren Dolben (Rye, NH/Berwick Academy), junior Brett Irwin (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) and sophomore Peter Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron) led the AU men Friday with a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay (1:36.67).

Scoring in individual races for the Saxon men were: Dolben, 10th in the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.22); junior Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell), 15th in the 500-yard freestyle (4:54.13); Sowinski, 16th in the 50-yard freestyle (21.83); freshman Zachary Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint), 20th in the 200-yard IM (2:03.80); and freshman Jeff Castellano (Fairport, NY/Fairport) and sophomore Zach Kranefeld (Millville, NJ/Millville), 17th (276.75 points) and 18th (264.20), respectively, in 3-meter diving.

The AU team of sophomore Kyle Kraeger (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta), freshman Jeffrey Rowland (Rochester, NY/Hilton); freshman David Coombs (Dansville, NY/Dansville) and freshman David Luke (Ocala, FL/West Port) took 16th in the 200-yard medley relay (1:43.16).

Scoring in individual events for the AU women were freshman Christina Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional), 23rd in the 50-yard freestyle (25.54), and senior Donna Hoops (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo), 24th in the 500-yard freestyle (5:35.21).

In the women’s 200-yard medley relay, the AU the team of Hoops, sophomore Heather Remchuk (Hornell, NY/Hornell), junior Eryn Matich (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) and Behr took 16th (1:59.17), while sophomore Paige Citarella (West Islip, NY/West Islip), junior Katie Ganley (Syracuse, NY/Westhill), junior Tracy Miller (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and junior Shelby Remington (Pike, NY/Letchworth) were 18th (2:05.77).

The meet continues today with three sessions. The 10 a.m. session will include the men’s and women’s 200-yard freestyle relay; men’s and women’s 400-yard IM; men’s and women’s 100-yard butterfly; men’s and women’s 200-yard freestyle; and men’s and women’s 400-yard medley relay. The 1 p.m. session will include women’s 3-meter diving and men’s 1-meter diving. The 6:30 p.m. session will include the men’s and women’s 200-yard butterfly; men’s and women’s 100-yard backstroke; men’s and women’s 100-yard breaststroke; and men’s and women’s 800-yard freestyle relay.
