AU swimming and diving teams complete second day at Ithaca Invitational

ITHACA, NY - The Alfred University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams completed Saturday’s second day of action of the three-day Ithaca College Invitational meet with the AU men in sixth place and the Saxon women in ninth.

AU is among nine teams competing in the meet, which is scored to 24 places and runs from Friday, Dec. 2, through Sunday, Dec. 4. Cornell is leading both the men’s and women’s standings.

Senior Warren Dolben (Rye, N Y/Berwick Academy) led the AU men Saturday with a second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke. His time of 57.99 seconds was just behind winner Michael Phillips of Hartwick’s 57.62, which set a new Ithaca pool record. Dolben also took 18th in the 400-yard IM (4:31.40).

Others scoring in individual races for the Saxon men were: freshman Zachary Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint), 10th in the 400-yard IM (4:24.66) and 11th in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.81); junior Brett Irwin (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton), 21st in the 100-yard butterfly (54.79 seconds) and 22nd in the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.98); junior Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell), 12th in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.97); sophomore Peter Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron), 17th in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.07); senior Richard Guarniero (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor), 22nd in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.66) and 17th in the 100-yard backstroke (56.31 seconds); sophomore Kyle Kraeger (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta), 22nd in the 100-yard backstroke (56.94 seconds); and freshman Jeff Castellano (Fairport, NY/Fairport) and sophomore Zach Kranefeld (Millville, NJ/Millville), 18th (311.35 points) and 19th (272.95), respectively, in 1-meter diving.

The AU team of freshmen David Luke (Ocala, FL/West Port) and David Coombs (Dansville, NY/Dansville), Guarniero and Sowinski took seventh in the men’s 200-yard free relay (1:27.83), while Toth, Irwin, Chapman and Dolben took 10th in the same relay (1:28.88). Guarniero, Dolben, Irwin and Sowinski were seventh in the 400-yard medley relay (3:36.94), and Kraeger, freshman Jeffrey Rowland (Rochester, NY/Hilton), Toth and Coombs were 15th (3:45.99).

Chapman, Dolben, Guarniero and Sowinski were sixth in the 800-yard free relay (7:14.73), while Toth, senior Rich Lenihan (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley), freshman Joseph Rogers (Dublin, NH) and Rowland were 13th (7:27.83).

Scoring in individual events for the AU women were senior Donna Hoops (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo), 20th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.50), and junior Katie Ganley (Syracuse, NY/Westhill), 18th in the 200-yard butterfly (2:25.33);

The AU team of freshman Christina Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional), sophomores Heather Remchuk (Hornell, NY/Hornell) and Paige Citarella (West Islip, NY/West Islip) and Hoops placed 14th in the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay (1:46.71), while freshman Molly Blair (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and juniors Eda Pellumbi (Windham, ME/Cheverus), Tracy Miller (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and Shelby Remington (Pike, NY/Letchworth) took 17th in the same relay (1:54.26).

Hoops, Remchuk, Ganley and Behr were 16th in the 400-yard medley relay (4:19.93), and freshman Allison Derwallis (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield-Ludlowe), Matich, Citarella and Remington were 18th (4:39.65). Behr, Matich, Citarella and Remington were 16th in the 800-yard free relay (8:41.57), and Ganley, Derwallis, Pellumbi and Miller were 17th (8:54.79).

The meet concludes today, beginning at 10 a.m., with the men’s and women’s 1,650-yard freestyle relay; men’s and women’s 100-yard freestyle; men’s and women’s 200-yard backstroke; men’s and women’s 200-yard breaststroke; and men’s and women’s 400-yard freestyle relay.
