AU swimming and diving teams split with RIT

ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams hosted RIT in the Saxons’ 2011-12 season home opener. The AU men’s team defeated the visiting Tigers, 132-109, while RIT beat she Saxon women, 140-87.

Junior Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell), senior Warren Dolben (Rye, NH/Berwick Academy) and freshman Zach Toth (Locport, NY/Starpoint) each won two individual events to pace the Alfred men. Chapman won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:17.31) and 500-yard free (4:56.56); Dolben won the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.47) and 100-yard breaststroke (59.32 seconds); and Toth won the 200-yard free (148.07) and 100-yard butterfly (54.26).

Senior Richard Guarniero (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor) won the 100-yard backstroke (56.05 seconds) and was second in the 200-yard free (1:48.98). Sophomore Peter Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron) won the 100-yard free (48.90 seconds) and placed second in the 50-yard free (22.38).

Freshman Jeffrey Rowland (Rochester, NY/Hilton) was second in the 1,000-yard free (10:41.96) and 500-yard free (5:10.98); senior Jeff Swartout (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) was second in the 200 IM (2:10.09); and sophomore Kyle Kraeger (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) was second in the 100-yard backstroke (56.30).

AU swept the men’s relays. Guarniero, Dolben, junior Brett Irwin (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) and Sowinski won the 200-yard medley relay (1:37.31); and freshman David Luke (Ocala, FL/West Port), Toth, Chapman and freshman David Coombs (Dansville, NY/Dansville) won the 200-yard free relay (1:28.68).

Freshman Christina Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) won two events - the 200-yard free (2:04.28) and 100-yard free (55.94 seconds) to lead the Alfred women. Other event winners were senior Donna Hoops (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo) in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.23) and sophomore Heather Remchuk (Hornell, NY/Hornell) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.71).

Junior Shelby Remington (Pike, NY/Letchworth) was second in the 1,000-yard free (11:50.55) and 500-yard free (5:49.51) and junior Eda Pellumbi (Windham, ME/Cheverus) was third in the 1,000-yard free (12:12.57) and 500-yard free (5:55.95). Junior Katie Ganley (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) was third in the 200-yard IM (2:26.47) and 100-yard butterfly (1:07.98); junior Eryn Matich (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) was third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:18.71); and freshman Sarah Dykstra (Bellingham, WA/Sehome) was third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:08.46).

The team of Hoops, Remchuk, freshman Mary Hannafin (Storrs, CT/E.O. Smith) and Behr was second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:58.18) and sophomore Paige Citarella (West Islip, NY/West Islip), Hannafin, junior Tracy Miller (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and Remington were second in the 200-yard free relay (1:52.18).

The AU men’s and women’s teams are in action next on Jan. 13 at 1 p.m. at home against Utica.
