AU men’s basketball team handles Cazenovia College, 78-65

CAZENOVIA, NY - Three Saxon players scored in double digits as the Alfred University men’s basketball team defeated host Cazenovia College, 78-65, Saturday afternoon.

AU outshot Cazenovia, 40 percent to 29 percent in the game’s first 20 minutes and led 38-27 at the half. For the game, Alfred shot 38 percent from the field as the Saxons overcame 23 turnovers. The Wildcats shot 37 percent but committed 15 miscues of their own, and AU outrebounded the Wildcats 46 to 35.

Junior forward Brett Dennis (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) scored a career-high 23 points, hitting seven shots from behind the arc, while adding seven rebounds to pace the Saxons (6-2, 0-0 Empire 8). Junior forward Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) recorded a double-double on 19 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, and senior forward Pat Hollenbeck (Ontario, NY/Wayne) narrowly missed a double-double as he netted 10 points and pulled down nine boards. Senior guard Josh Parker (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) chipped in with eight points, eight rebounds, four assists and a pair of blocks.

Darnell Sampson scored 18 points and Matt Perry had 11 points and four rebounds to pace the Wildcats (3-6).

AU returns to action Tuesday, Jan. 3, at 6 p.m., when they take on visiting Pitt-Bradford.
