AU women’s basketball team falls at Geneseo

GENESEO, NY - The Alfred University women’s basketball team was defeated by host SUNY Geneseo 62-41, Tuesday afternoon, in a non-conference matchup.

Each team would score 28 points in the first half of action as the Saxons shot 34 percent from the floor and Geneseo shot 44 percent. In the second half the Blue Knights shot an impressive 50 percent from the floor, while limiting AU to a mere 15 percent from floor in the second half, and outscored the Saxons AU (7-3, 0-0 Empire 8) 34-14. For the game, Geneseo shot 47 percent to AU’s 27, and held a 51-32 advantage in rebounds.

Freshman guard Harley Cleary (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) finished with a team-best 13 points, and added four boards, three assists, and two steals to pace the Saxons. Sophomore forward Grace Williamson (Olean, NY/Olean) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, and sophomore guard Cate Mensler (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Catholic) netted eight points.

Four Blue Knights (6-3) scored in double figures including Katelyn Sharbonneau, Shannon McGinnis, and Lea Sobieraski who each netted 11 points.

AU plays next on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 6 p.m., when they open up Empire 8 Conference play against visiting Stevens.
