Alfred surpasses Pitt-Bradford, 59-56
In an evenly matched contest, both teams managed to shoot 37 percent from the floor for the game, as scoring went back and forth. Turnovers played a key role in AU’s success as they forced 17 Pitt-Bradford turnovers, and had seven steals throughout the course of the game.
Each team would improve on poor first half shooting (34 percent for AU and 27 percent for the Panthers), as Pitt-Bradford shot 46 percent to the Saxons 41. Despite being outscored in the second half, the Saxons were able to convert key free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Senior guard Josh Parker (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) netted a game-high 21 points, and senior forward Derek Lewis (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads (Corning CC)) scored nine points, to pace the Saxons attack. Sophomore forward Mike Branche (Schenectady, NY/Colonie) (two blocks, and four points) accumulated a game-best 10 rebounds.
Tyler Ferguson led the Panthers with 16 points, on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor to help the Panthers (3-7). Alex VanDeusen also contributed with 13 points and six assists.
AU (7-2, 0-0 Empire 8) returns to action Thursday, Jan. 6, at 8 p.m., when they take on visiting Stevens Tech.
