Stevens knocks off Lady Saxons in Empire 8 Conference opener

ALFRED, NY - Visiting Stevens Institute of Technology scored a 72-56 victory over the Alfred University women’s basketball team in the Empire 8 Conference opener for both teams Friday evening at the McLane Center.

Stevens (4-6, 1-0 Empire 8) used hot shooting - the Ducks made 50 percent of their shots for the game - and outrebounded the Saxons 36-32 while forcing 20 AU turnovers. Stevens made 47 percent of its shots in the first half in taking a 41-22 lead at intermission. Alfred (7-4, 0-1 Empire 8) closed to within seven points midway through the second half before the Ducks pulled away.

Alfred shot 36 percent from the floor in the first half and 44 percent after intermission to finish shooting 40 percent for the contest. The Saxons made 41 percent of their shots from three-point range (seven of 17) to 33 percent. (five of 15) for the Ducks, but the visitors made 29 field goals to 20 for the Saxons.

AU sophomore forward Grace Williamson (Olean, NY/Olean) had a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds before fouling out with about five minutes left. Freshman guard Harley Cleary (Rochester, NY/Mercy) netted a team-high 13 points and senior guard Kacey Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) had a game-best seven assists with no turnovers.

Dawn Garcia led four Stevens players in double figures with 23 points, five rebounds and a pair of steals. Victoria Webber scored 16 points and pulled down eight boards; Jillian Barrett had 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and seven steals; and Avis Benjamin had 11 points.

AU plays next on Saturday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m. at home against Empire 8 foe Hartwick College.
