AU women’s basketball team drops 60-40 decision to visiting Hartwick

ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University women’s basketball team suffered a 60-40 setback to visiting Hartwick College Saturday afternoon at the McLane Center.

With the loss, AU falls to 7-5 overall and 0-2 in Empire 8 Conference play. The visiting Hawks, who shot 45 percent from the floor while holding AU to 27 percent shooting, improve to 9-2 overall, with a perfect 2-0 mark in Empire 8 play.

Hartwick led 36-19 at the half on the strength of Maria Foglia’s 14 points and Kate Purcell’s eight points and seven boards. The Hawks outrebounded Alfred 22-16 in the first period and shot 44 percent to the Saxons’ 29 percent. For the game, Hartwick outrebounded AU 43-30.

Hartwick took a 40-22 led three minutes into the second half, then went on an 11-0 run over the next seven minutes to take a commanding 51-22 lead.

Sophomore forward Grace Williamson (Olean, NY/Olean) had 13 points, eight rebounds and two blocks to pace Alfred. Freshman guard Harley Cleary (Rochester, NY/Mercy) scored 12 points and sophomore forward Sarah Federico (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels) added eight points and three rebounds.

Foglia scored a game-high 16 points for Hartwick, sinking nine of 10 foul shots. Purcell finished with nine points and 10 rebounds and Tracey Koch added 10 points and four boards.

AU plays next on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 6 p.m. at home against Brockport
