AU tops previously unbeaten Hartwick, 72-66
For the first half of play AU was outshot 38 percent to 36 percent from the field and from beyond the arc (22 to 13 percent) by Hartwick. The Saxons would head into intermission trailing 33-25.
AU would come out in the second half as they forced Hartwick (12-1, 1-1 Empire 8) into 13 turnovers and forcing 10 steals. AU would also outshoot Hartwick from the field (42 to 38 percent), from beyond the arc (38 to 36 percent), and knocked down key free throws en route to converting 88 percent from the charity stripe. Hartwick would shoot 38 percent from the field, 36 percent from the three-point line, and 79 percent from the free-throw line. For the game, AU was able come back from the first half deficit and prevail in regulation while keeping a close shooting percent from the field (39 to 38) with Hartwick.
The Saxons were led by senior guard Josh Parker (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) who finished with a new career-high of 32 points, while adding five steals, one block, and one assist. Junior forward Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) also assisted with the Saxon victory by adding 14 points. Senior forward Derek Lewis (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads (Corning CC)) was able to grab nine rebounds throughout the game, eight being defensive.
Hartwick’s Chris Ryder led the team with 20 points and eight rebounds. Mark Blazek and Jared Suderly also scored in double figures.
AU (8-3, 1-1 Empire 8) returns to action, Jan. 13, at 8 p.m., when they travel to Pittsford to take on Nazareth.
