Brockport takes down Saxons in two overtimes

ALFRED, NY - Visiting Brockport defeated the Alfred University women’s basketball team, 77-75, in a double-overtime thriller Tuesday evening in the McLane Center.

LaDonya Rolle’s layup with 1:04 left in the second extra session provided the deciding points. Rolle’s winning hoop came 24 seconds after AU senior guard Christina Jordan (Cornwall-on-the-Hudson, NY/Cornwall) hit a three-pointer -her fourth of the game - to tie the contest at 75-75.

The game was close throughout, as Brockport (3-7) rallied from an early 11-point deficit (20-9, 7:24 into the game) to take a 39-37 halftime lead. Alfred (7-6, 0-2 Empire 8) outscored the visitors, 25-23, in the second half and the game was tied at 62-all at the end of regulation.

Both teams shot well in the first half, with Alfred holding a slight edge in field goal percentage (48 percent to 47 percent). Brockport held the halftime lead in part to its 21-14 rebounding advantage. The Eagles continued their dominance on the glass in the second half, outrebounding AU 21-13. Brockport outshot Alfred (46 percent to 33 percent) in the second half, but was hurt by 13 turnovers in the period.

Both teams netted seven points in the first overtime, with neither holding a lead of more than three points. Brockport was up 67-64 midway through the period when Jordan nailed a three-pointer to tie the game. AU sophomore forward Grace Williamson (Olean, NY/Olean) made a jumper with 1:50 left in the first overtime to tie the game at 69-all, but neither team scored after that, sending the contest to a second extra session.
For the game, Brockport shot 46 percent to 40 percent for Alfred and held a 51-37 rebounding edge. Alfred made six three-pointers to only three for Brockport.

Williamson led five AU players in double figures with a game-high 19 points to go with a team-best 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Harley Cleary (Rochester, NY/Mercy) (nine assists) and sophomore forward Sarah Federico (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels) each scored 14; and Jordan and freshman forward Lindsay Drummond (Ogdensburg, NY/Ogdensburg) each netted 12. Sophomore guard Cate Mensler (Ballston, Spa, NY/Saratoga Catholic) chipped in with eight rebounds.

Phoebe Byrnes scored 19 points to pace Brockport, while Cecilia Sigrist added 18. Rolle finished with 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

AU, which dropped its fifth straight game, plays next on Friday, Jan. 13, at 6 p.m. at Empire 8 foe Nazareth.
