Lady Saxons fall on the road, 71-62

PITTSFORD, NY-Host Nazareth College knocked off the Alfred University women’s basketball team 72-61, Friday evening in an Empire 8 Conference matchup.

Despite holding a 41-37 lead in shooting percentage from the floor in the first half, the Saxons would head into intermission trailing 34-30. Sophomore guard Cate Mensler (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Catholic) started the second half hitting a three-pointer just under a minute into the second frame to bring AU within a point (34-33). This would be as close as the Saxons would get as the Golden Flyers went on to outscore AU 38-31 in the second half. For the game, Nazareth shot 40 percent from the floor to the Saxons 39, and AU was out rebounded 46-26.

Freshman guard Harley Cleary (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) netted a game-high 19 points, adding a game-best five assists, and three boards to lead AU (7-7, 0-3 Empire 8). Sophomore forward Grace Williamson (Olean, NY/Olean) recorded her ninth double-double out of 13 games this season notching 17 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore forward Sarah Federico (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels) chipped in with seven points and four rebounds.

Brittany Wilson finished 18 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists to pace the Golden Flyers (9-4, 2-1 Empire 8). Erica Shaw netted 16 points as she finished 10-of-10 from the free-throw line, and Brittany Patenaude notched 12 points.

AU returns to action Saturday, Jan. 14, at 2 p.m., when they take on host St. John Fisher in an Empire 8 Conference matchup.
