Saxons defeat Fisher, 76-62
PITTSFORD, NY-Four Saxons scored in double figures, as the Alfred University men’s basketball team stomped host St. John Fisher, Saturday afternoon in Empire 8 action.
The Saxons used hot shooting, as they shot 49 percent from the floor for the contest to pick up their second Empire 8 victory of the season. With the victory AU improves to 2-2 in Empire 8 Conference play and 9-4 overall. St. John Fisher falls to 9-6 overall, and 2-2 in Empire 8 action.
AU held an eight point (37-29) advantage at the half and would outscore the hosts 39-33 in the second half. For the game, AU finished 10-of-17 from behind the arc for an impressive 59 percent, while holding the hosts to just 16 percent (three-of-19). Despite the Saxons shooting success throughout the contest, St. John Fisher held a 35-32 advantage in rebounds.
Senior forward Derek Lewis (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads (Corning CC)) register 16 points, five rebounds and two blocks to pace the Saxons. Junior guards Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) (four rebounds) and Tim Costello (Windsor, NY/Windsor) (two assists) each netted 14 points and senior forward Pat Hollenbeck (Ontario, NY/Wayne) finished with 12 points, four boards, two assists and a steal. Senior guard Josh Parker (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) chipped in with seven points, nine rebounds (all defensive), four assists and a steal.
Justin Plata netted a game-best 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting and Jordan Gettings scored 15 points to lead the Cardinals.
AU returns to action Friday, Jan. 20, at 8 p.m., against host Utica College in an Empire 8 Conference matchup.
