AU swimming and diving teams swept at Hartwick

ONEONTA, NY - Host Hartwick College swept the Alfred University swimming and diving teams at a dual meet Saturday afternoon. Hartwick beat the Saxon men’s team, 188-93, while the Hawk women defeated AU, 173-89.

Freshman Christina Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) led the Alfred women, winning the 100-yard freestyle (56.25 seconds) and taking second in both the 50-yard free (25.91) and 100-yard butterfly (1:05.01).

Other top swimmers for the AU women were: senior Donna Hoops (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo), second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.85) and third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:28.14); junior Katie Ganley (Syracuse, NY/Westhill), second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:26.71); and junior Eryn Matich (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City), third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:26.64).

The team of Hoops, sophomore Heather Remchuk (Hornell, NY/Hornell), Matich and Behr took second in the 200 medley relay (1:59.21), while junior Shelby Remington (Pike, NY/Letchworth), freshman Molly Blair (Auburn, NY/Auburn), junior Tracy Miller (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and sophomore Paige Citarella (West Islip, NY/West Islip) were third in the 200 free relay (1:57.03).

For the AU men, senior Warren Dolben (Rye, NH/Berwick Academy) led the way with second-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.96 seconds) and 200-yard IM (2:05.75) and a third place in the 200-yard breast (2:20.84).

Other top performers for the Saxon men were: junior Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell), third in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:23.32) and 500-yard free (5:01.19); freshman Dave Coombs (Dansville, NY/Dansville), third in the 100-yard backstroke (57.82 seconds); freshman Zac Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint), third in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.15) and 200-yard backstroke (2:06.40); sophomore Peter Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron), third in the 50-yard free (22.80 seconds) and 100-yard free (50.01 seconds); junior Brett Irwin (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton), third in the 100-yard butterfly (55.42 seconds); and sophomore Zach Kranefeld (Millville, NY/Millville), third in 3-meter diving (140.50 points).

Senior Rich Guarniero, Dolben, Irwin and freshman David Luke (Ocala, FL/West Port) took second in the 200 medley relay (1:38.87) and Luke, Coombs, Guarniero and Sowinski were second in the 200 free relay (1:30.01).

The AU men’s and women’s teams are in action next on Saturday, Jan. 21, at noon at home against Brockport.
