Lady Saxons remain winless in conference play

ITHACA, NY - The Alfred University women’s basketball team is still seeking it’s first conference win after losing to host Ithaca College, 68-38, Saturday afternoon.

AU scored the games first five points to claim a 5-0 lead with just over a minute into the contest. The Saxons lead was short lived as the Bombers went on to outscored AU 31-11, over the final 19 minutes of the first half to claim a 36-16 advantage at intermission.

The struggles continued in the second half as the Saxons committed nine second half miscues (25 for the game), en route to netting only 22 points in the second half, while allowing Ithaca to 32 points. For the game, Ithaca shot 42 percent to the Saxons 35, including 42 percent from behind the arc and limited AU to just 13 percent from behind the arc.

Freshman guard Harley Cleary (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) scored a team-best 14 points and sophomore forward Grace Williamson (Olean, NY/Olean) recorded a double-double on 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to lead the Saxons (7-10, 0-6 Empire 8). Senior guard Kacey Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) dished out four assists and added six points.

Ithaca’s (14-3, 6-0 Empire 8) Kathryn Campbell scored a game-high 16 points, five rebounds, and five assists and Jenn Escobido also added 10 points to pace Bombers.

AU returns to action Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 6 p.m., when they travel to take on host Elmira.
